Most furniture in this class fails at the edges. A laminate surface over a particleboard core holds until moisture reaches the joint — then the edge band lifts, the panel swells, and the piece is finished long before its structure is.

RNF-0001 has no edges of that kind. Sides, top, shelf and base are cut and folded from 5 mm sheet aluminium, so the visible edge is the material itself: radiused, continuous, the same all the way through. Nothing is applied to it and nothing can come off it.

The 5 mm section is deliberate. Structurally the piece would carry its load at 3 mm. At 5 mm the folded edge reads as solid, and that is the difference between a metal cabinet and a piece of furniture.

It ships raw. No coating, no lacquer, no film — the surface you see is mill-finish aluminium, as it comes off the roll and out of the brake. Roll lines, faint scoring from handling, variation in sheen between one face and the next: these are visible, they are not faults, and no two pieces are identical. Aluminium forms its own oxide layer on contact with air within seconds, and that layer is what protects it. The piece will darken slightly and even out over the first months of use. This is furniture that shows how it was made rather than hiding it.

Powder coating is available in any RAL colour at no additional charge, applied after fabrication so the film is continuous across every fold. Coated pieces are rated for covered outdoor use. Raw is indoor only.

Manufactured in Zagreb to our own drawing. The alloy specification, tolerances and finish are ours — which means custom dimensions, custom colours and project quantities are quoted from the same drawing rather than sourced from someone else's catalogue.

Material & durability
Aluminium–magnesium alloy, EN AW-5754
H111 Magnesium is the principal alloying element in the 5000 series, and it is what gives the alloy corrosion resistance in humid air without any surface treatment at all. This is why these pieces can be supplied raw and why uncoated aluminium does not behave like uncoated steel: the oxide film forms in seconds, it is self-repairing, and scratching through it simply starts the process again. The practical consequence is that there is no finish to fail. Nothing chips, nothing peels, and no cut or folded edge is more vulnerable than any other part of the surface.
One material, full section
The failure mode of the category is delamination. A laminate face over a particleboard core has an edge that must be sealed with a separate material, and moisture at that seam lifts the band and swells the core. Everything in this line is cut and folded from a single sheet — one material through the full section, with every visible edge a radiused fold of the same stock. There is nothing applied and nothing that can come off.
Surface variation
Mill-finish aluminium carries roll lines and handling marks, and sheen varies between faces and between pieces. This is inherent to raw material and is not a defect. If you require a uniform surface, order the piece powder coated.
Powder coating
Polyester powder coat in any RAL colour, no additional charge. Cured after fabrication, so the film is continuous across folds and no cut edge is left uncoated. Coated pieces are suitable for covered outdoor use; raw pieces are indoor only.

Care & cleaning
Routine cleaning
Wipe with a soft cloth, warm water and a pH-neutral detergent, then dry the surface. Raw aluminium shows fingerprints and water marks more readily than a coated surface — cosmetic, and it evens out as the patina develops.
Do not use
Strongly alkaline cleaners, including caustic soda and oven cleaners. These etch aluminium and the damage is permanent. Also avoid strong acids, chlorine bleach and abrasive powders.
Restoring the surface
Unlike a coating, a raw surface can be worked. Scratches and uneven patina come out with a fine abrasive pad worked in one consistent direction, then wiped clean. Work the full face rather than the mark alone, or the repair will be more visible than the damage. Patina The surface darkens slightly and evens out over the first months of use, faster in handled areas. This is the oxide layer building and it protects the metal. Leave it or take it back — both are fine.
If powder coated
Neutral detergent only, no abrasives, no solvents. Touch up any chip promptly with a coating matched to the original RAL reference.

FAQ
  1. Does a metal nightstand feel cold?
Aluminium reads cooler than timber for the first few seconds of contact and then sits at room temperature like anything else in the room. The more noticeable difference is sound — a phone or a glass set down on bare metal is louder than on wood. Felt or cork pads under frequently used objects deal with it.
  2. Will it mark the floor?
The piece stands on a folded edge rather than four legs, so weight is distributed along its length instead of concentrated at points. Felt pads are not supplied; fit them before positioning the piece on hard flooring or stone.
  3. Can it be used in a bathroom or another humid room?
Yes. Humidity is the failure mode for laminate and particleboard, not for aluminium — there is no core to swell and no edge band to lift. Raw aluminium handles bathroom humidity without issue. Standing water should still be wiped up, as it leaves mineral marks on any bare metal.
  4. What about perfume, cosmetics and nail polish remover?
On the raw finish, acetone and alcohol-based products are harmless — there is no coating for them to attack. Strongly alkaline products are the ones to keep off it; they etch bare aluminium permanently. On a powder-coated piece the reverse applies: solvents can damage the coating, so use neutral detergent only.
  5. Can a raw piece be powder coated later?
Yes. A raw piece can be coated at any point, and a coated piece can be stripped and re-coated. The piece comes apart with one tool, which is what makes this practical. Quoted on request.
  6. Does the visible hardware need re-tightening?
The panels are bolted through spacers with standard hex hardware. As with any bolted furniture, check and re-tighten after the first few weeks and occasionally after that. No tools beyond those supplied are needed.
