The shelf is a closed volume; the underside is its floor, and it drops down on a gas strut when released. It is shallow and wide, which is the right shape for flat items and the wrong one for volume — this is not a place to put a laptop.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe gas strut is the reason this works rather than merely opens. A hinged panel of this size would drop under its own weight and need catching; a friction hinge would sag within a year. The strut holds the tray wherever you let go of it and takes the weight on the way down and back up.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMelamine-faced board, in any decor, colour or texture the board manufacturer offers.
