Nobody looks at the underside of a shelf. It is the one surface in a room that is out of sight by default — above eye level if the shelf is high, below it if the shelf is low, and never the first place anyone checks.

RNI-0004 puts the compartment there. The shelf is a closed volume; the underside is its floor, and it drops down on a gas strut when released. Present a magnetic key or an RFID card and the tray lowers under its own controlled weight, holds where it stops, and closes with a push. Nothing about the shelf from above, from the front or from either side indicates that it moves.

It hold documents, a passport, cash, jewellery, a watch, cards. It is shallow and wide, which is the right shape for flat items and the wrong one for volume — this is not a place to put a laptop.

The gas strut is the reason this works rather than merely opens. A hinged panel of this size would drop under its own weight and need catching; a friction hinge would sag within a year. The strut holds the tray wherever you let go of it and takes the weight on the way down and back up.

Melamine-faced board, in any decor, colour or texture the board manufacturer offers. All visible edges carry edgebanding — not the foil used on flat-pack furniture, which chips at the corner within a year and shows the core underneath.

Made to order in Zagreb. Specify the decor and the lock type when you order.

Melamine-faced chipboard

The panel is standard melamine-faced chipboard — the same board used across European cabinet manufacturing, in whatever decor, colour and texture the board maker offers. It is stable, it is dimensionally consistent, and it takes hardware reliably. It is not the interesting part of this piece and it is not sold as though it were.

All visible edges are edgebanded. That is the difference between furniture and flat-pack: a raw chipboard edge absorbs moisture, chips at the corner and shows the core. An edgebanded one does none of those things.

The hardware

This is where the money goes. Concealed hinges and soft-close runners throughout, so nothing slams and nothing has to be caught on the way down. One shelf uses a gas strut: the front lifts under its own control, holds wherever you leave it, and closes without dropping.

The compartment closes flush. From the front there is no handle, no pull, no visible catch and no gap that reads differently from any other line on the piece.

Choice of lock

Every piece is supplied with either a magnetic lock or an RFID lock, specified when you order.

The magnetic lock opens with a key magnet held against the front. There is nothing to power, nothing to fail and no electronics — the magnet lives on a keyring or on the back of a nearby object.

The RFID lock opens with a card or fob presented to the front. It suits anyone who would rather not carry a magnet, and allows more than one person to have access.

Both are concealed behind the front. Neither is visible from outside the piece.
Care & cleaning
Routine cleaning

Wipe with a soft cloth, warm water and a mild detergent, then dry. Melamine is a closed surface — nothing soaks in, and it does not need polish, oil or wax. Wipe spills rather than leaving them to dry.

Do not use

Abrasive pads, scouring powders, solvents or bleach. These dull the melamine and the change is permanent. Steam cleaners and saturated cloths force moisture into the joints, which is the one thing chipboard does not tolerate.

Edges and joints

Edgebanded edges are sealed, but standing water at a joint will eventually find its way in. Dry any water that collects along a front or a top edge rather than leaving it.

Hardware

Soft-close runners and hinges are set at the factory and need no adjustment. If a front stops closing flush, the hinge has usually shifted rather than failed — the adjustment screws are visible when the front is open. The gas strut is a sealed unit and cannot be serviced; if it stops holding, it is replaced.

Locks

The magnetic lock has no moving electronics and needs nothing. Keep the key magnet away from cards, drives and anything else magnetically sensitive. The RFID lock is battery-powered — replace the battery when the indicator changes, and keep a spare card somewhere other than inside the compartment.

FAQ
  1. How does it open?
Present the magnetic key or the RFID card and the underside releases, then lowers on a gas strut. It holds wherever you stop it. Push it up to close and it locks again.
  2. Can someone find it?
The compartment is in the underside of the shelf, which is the surface nobody looks at. There is no handle, no gap and no seam, and from every normal viewing angle the shelf is a solid volume. Someone who knows to look will find it — this is concealment, not a safe. It is not rated to resist a determined attempt with tools, and nothing at this price is.
  3. What fits inside?
Documents, a passport, cash, jewellery, a watch, cards. Shallow and wide — the right shape for flat items, the wrong one for anything with volume.
  4. What can I put on top?
Whatever a shelf normally holds, up to 30 kg. Opening the compartment does not move the shelf itself, so items on top stay where they are — unlike a lift-up lid, which has to be cleared first.
  5. How high should I mount it?
Above eye level and the underside is invisible to anyone in the room. Below it and the compartment is easier to reach but the underside is more exposed. Most people mount it at or slightly above shoulder height, which gives both.
  6. Where does the lock read?
There is no marking, no plate and no indicator — you learn where it is when the unit is installed.
  7. Magnetic or RFID — which should I choose?
The magnetic lock has no electronics and no battery. Nothing to charge, nothing to fail, and the key is a magnet that lives on a keyring. The RFID lock opens with a card or fob, suits more than one person having access, and is battery-powered — you replace the battery, and you keep a spare card somewhere other than inside the compartment. Neither costs more than the other.
  8. What happens if the lock fails or I lose the key?
The magnetic lock has no failure mode short of physical damage; a replacement key magnet is inexpensive and we can send one. If an RFID lock loses power, the compartment stays closed until the battery is replaced. Contact us before attempting to force it — forcing damages the carcass and the strut mounting.
  9. Does the gas strut need maintenance?
No. It is a sealed unit and cannot be serviced. If it stops holding the tray where you leave it, it is replaced rather than adjusted — contact us and we will send the correct part.
  10. Can I choose the colour?
Yes. Any decor, colour or texture the board manufacturer offers. Send the decor reference when you order, or tell us what you are matching and we will send options.
  11. Can I get it in another size?
Yes. The cut list is generated from the same drawing, so length, depth and height are parameters rather than a redesign. Quoted on request.
